What Is CEA (Carcinoembryonic Antigen)?

What it is

CEA is a glycoprotein normally produced during fetal development; levels rise in some cancers, especially colorectal cancer.

Why it matters

Used in colorectal cancer monitoring and, with other markers, screening support.

Whole blood / serum / plasma

Interpretation

Elevated = supports colorectal cancer monitoring.

Limitations

Rises in benign conditions and smokers; not diagnostic alone.
